Energy and Transport

The Energy and Transport sub-group are currently working alongside IET and Community Energy Scotland to establish Islay’s present and future energy demands. Islay’s energy use includes electricity provided by the grid, as well as solid and liquid fuels used to heat buildings and power industry and vehicles.

The transport sector in particular is currently the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in Scotland and will be facing increasing attention in the coming years. Rural and island life means ferries and car travel are essential to the community of Islay.

Islay’s energy and transport demands are unique among the six islands chosen for the Carbon Neutral Islands project, with Islay’s booming economy requiring significant fuel and freight travel. The path to a carbon neutral Islay will require widespread investment in transitioning to renewable forms of energy, and improvements in the energy efficiency of buildings, industries and infrastructure.
